This is a large state owned casino, within the Radisson twin-tower Hotel by the same name. It is a three-part casino spread between the towers of the hotel building. The main live table games area is in the rear tower on the same floor level as the hotel reception hall. It comprises 2 gaming currency sections for the table games - one US$ and one U$, 32 slots/video machines, the cardroom area for poker players, a restaurant and a bar. The US$ gaming section has 4 roulette tables and two blackjack tables, and these are the only games played in US dollars. Everything else is in Uruguayan currency. Buying-in chips is done through the cash desk. You cannot hand in money at the tables. The restaurant has a limited menu in Spanish and the service is good. In the basement below the table games area there is a slots hall with about 150 machines. Opposite the slots hall, on the same level, in the front tower of the hotel, there is another slots hall with about 300 machines. All gaming areas are accessible from inside the hotel and from the street, under the corridor that joins the two towers (see photos). The live roulette tables are the single zero American style. The roulette table used in this state run casino is much longer than the standard American style table. There is an extra space between the wheel and the layout, where the coloured chip stacks are placed (not around the wheel), stacked in 10s instead of 20s. The sizes of the coloured roulette chips in this particular casino are much smaller than the standard size chips found in most casinos. They look like the chips as used in French roulette. The cash chips are colour coded only. They do not show the amount. The dealer will not place bets on behalf of players. The dealer uses a stick to collect the chips from the far end of the table and chips are stacked by hand. The outside bets markings are detached from the main numbers layout. They are at the edge of the tablecloth and therefore players cannot place their chips on the tablecloth, only on the hard surface on the perimeter of the table where drinks are placed.

This is a nice medium to large, state owned casino located on the ground floor. The casino is open daily from noon for slots/video machines and from 9pm for live table games. However, in winter the casino is not busy during the week. Only at the weekend, there is some activity. Entrance is free and you do not need to show an ID or to register. The gaming currency for live table games is in US dollars only. The slots/video machines are in a hall of their own and are divided into two groups: one for US dollars currency and one for Uruguayan currency. There are no touchbet roulette machines. Only three video roulette machines with single zero wheel. One peculiarity of this state run casino is the layout of the roulette table. The table is much longer than the standard American style and all the chip stacks are placed between the wheel and the layout (not around the wheel) and are stacked in 10s instead of 20s. Additionally, the numbers on the wheel are lined up facing outward (see photo below, after the listings). Tipping the dealer when you win at roulette is common. Although tipping is optional, dealers usually remind you to give them a tip as they pay your winnings. There is a restaurant behind the table games area. They offer a limited menu (in Spanish) at reasonable prices. The food is very good and the service is excellent.

This is a very large and beautiful casino, part of the Conrad Hotel Resort Punta del Este. It is located in the reception hall area of the hotel. It can be accessed from the hotel reception hall and also from the car park area, which is located on a lower level, via two long escalators, one going up leading to the casino and one coming down back to the car park. This is a 24-hour casino and is privately owned. The atmosphere inside the gaming area is pleasant and there are regular promotions and live shows, especially during the winter period so as to keep up the flow of customers. The casino personnel are friendly and helpful. There is no need to register or to show an ID when you enter the casino, and the entrance is free. The gaming currency is in US$ only. There are two VIP rooms; one for slot/video machines (Club Fortuna) and one for live table games (Club Conrad). You need to become a member to enter a VIP room. There is a large card room for poker players and they run regular tournaments. The live roulette tables are the single zero American style, but the automatic touchbet roulette machine with eight terminals, and the five independent video roulette machines both use a double zero wheel. Tipping the dealer when you win at roulette is common. Although tipping is optional, dealers usually remind you as they pay your winnings. Of the several restaurants available in the hotel, two serve the casino clientele, as they are close by. The Las Brisas restaurant is in the reception hall opposite the casino entrance. They offer a large variety of dishes and is open 24 hours. The food is excellent and the service is first class. The Manjares restaurant is in the lower level at the entrance to the casino when accessed from the car park, at the bottom of the escalators. During the winter months, this restaurant is open on certain days of the week only.

The resort is actually in La Barra, a town about 15 minutes drive from the centre of Punta del Este. By taxi it costs about U$500. The casino can only be accessed from the back of the property. There is no direct access from the hotel. The casino is open daily from noon for slots/video machines and from 9pm for live table games. However, in winter the casino is not busy during the week. Only at the weekend there is some activity. Additionally, in winter the restaurant facility is limited to a buffet service. Entrance is free and you don't need to show an ID or to register. The gaming currency for both the slots/video machines and table games is in US dollars. There are no touchbet roulette machines. The layout of the roulette table used in this state run casino is not common. The table is much longer than the standard American style and all the chip stacks are placed between the wheel and the layout (not around the wheel) and are stacked in 10s instead of 20s. Taxis: Taxis in Uruguay are safe and fairly affordable. You get them on the street, at a taxi rank, or call them by phone. Taxis in Uruguay use meters and have fixed costs. The taxis in Montevideo are plentiful and inexpensive. The cabs are easily recognizable, painted in black and yellow, with a lit sign with the word 'TAXI' on top. The meter starts out at zero and goes up as you ride. Once you have reached your destination, the number corresponds to a price on a list. You can ask to see the list in advance as not all taxis display the list. The fares are higher during the night and at weekends. It is advisable to carry bills of small denominations and coins because most drivers do not carry change even for a U$500 bill. Tipping is not common but if you want to give it is welcome.

Money: Credit cards are widely accepted in most major towns, but not everywhere. Cash cards can be used in some ATMs in Montevideo and Punta del Este. Debit cards are not widely accepted. Prices in Uruguay are about 25% higher than in Argentina and are not much lower than in the USA or in Western Europe. Prices are often quoted using the U$ symbol, which may be easily confused with the US$ symbol.

History of Casinos in Uruguay
